Find out how we teach hands-on skills via online training.
Updated 1 week ago
We pride ourselves in ensuring students gain hands-on practical knowledge and well-rounded skill sets to achieve successful and rewarding careers in natural resources. As many of our courses are delivered online via Zoom, students often ask:
How will I complete the field component of the course? Will I need to travel?
Don't worry! Unless an in-person location is specified on the course booking page, you will not need to travel to complete the field exercises involved in your course. We refer to these exercises as "student-led" because they will be completed independently, by you, in your local area.
A typical day of online learning with NRTG looks something like this:
Join the instructor via the Zoom link emailed to you or linked in your NRTG account. Throughout the morning, the instructor will cover the foundational knowledge and theory required for your training. They will also provide guidance on what to do for the field exercise, and what notes or data you need to collect.
Break for lunch.
Venture into your local area* to conduct the field exercise and collate your findings.
Return to the class via Zoom for discussion of findings, challenges, and potential improvements. Your instructor will provide feedback on your field exercise to help understand any areas of promise or improvement.
* Instructors are prepared with alternatives if you do not have access to the required habitat or site type, e.g. wetland. Please also note, if there are adverse weather conditions on the day of your training, your instructor would be happy to provide an alternate activity that still enables you to build and apply the skill(s) learned. You are responsible for your safety in the field in your local area, and we do not advise any student to enter water or conduct exercises in adverse conditions.
